When faced with a hard decision, a person might rationalize a choice by saying, “actually, for some people, I think it is a good idea to choose abortion.” And then there are those that celebrate life in all circumstances.
Sarah Palin is the governor of Alaska. Described by the Family Research Council as “a pro-family champion who has advanced the culture of life at every opportunity,” Governor Palin and her husband Todd were faced with a difficult decision. Pregnant with their fifth child, Sarah was told that the baby would be born with Down’s syndrome. Studies show that as many as ninety percent of the women who receive a Down’s syndrome diagnosis abort the baby.[Todd and Sarah Palin chose life.
Nina and Andy Fuller faced that same decision. Nina Fuller:
“I was 36 years old at the time and just really prayed about having another baby because, you know, as a mom of three sons, I really dreamed of having a girl.”
By the time their youngest son was 7 years old, Nina and her husband Andy found that they were expecting their fourth child. Nina Fuller:
“When we finally got the diagnosis, after the tests were run, the baby had Down’s syndrome and two heart defects, and we were devastated.”
Coral Ridge Ministries included the Fuller’s story in our 10 Truths about Abortion video. Nina Fuller:
“I thought,‘God, why us? Why me? I don’t understand this, God, I’m sick to my stomach with grief and with fear. But, Lord, I know that you love us, and I know that you have a plan for not only my life but this baby’s life. And we’ll get through this, God.’ “
Andy Fuller:
“You go through your entire life with a position, and most of us never get that position tested. And then, bang, it was tested.”
Any fears, any doubts, were completely wiped away when Tess Fuller was born. Nina Fuller:
“When I held this tiny, baby girl for the first time, I was completely in love with her. I was barely cognizant, and all of those fears that I had, any feelings of anger or frustration, were completely wiped away, because God had given me new life. This was the baby I had prayed for. This was my little girl.
When Governor Sarah Palin gave birth to her son, Trig, the family issued this statement: “Trig is beautiful and already adored by us … We feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We are truly blessed.”[2]
As the Palins and the Fullers well know, every life is precious and worth living.
