One of the most effective TV ads ever . . . featured an elderly lady squinting up at the counter after seeing her tiny hamburger and asking loudly, “Hey! Where’s the beef!”
Americans might ask a similar question about the proposed health care bills working their way through Congress.
Robert Knight, Coral Ridge Ministries’ Senior Writer and Washington correspondent, recently wrote a column for Townhall.com in which he noted that no one has actually seen the Senate bill because it doesn’t really exist. That’s right. Senators have been relying on summaries only, and may vote on it without reading actual language.
What’s more, entire sections will be added after the votes. This was the case with the thousand-page House version, in which 75 so-called “phantom amendments” were later added.
We don’t often agree with Michigan Rep. John Conyers, but he said he found it absurd that members were voting on bills that they could not possibly read.
There’s something wrong when trillions of tax dollars are spent and miles of regulations enacted without lawmakers really seeing the text before it becomes law.
The American people should take a page from the lady at the counter and ask: “Hey! Where’s the Bill?!”
