God’s
Intricate
Timetable
Jesus Christ, the Messiah, came at the precise time
prophesied hundreds of years before by Daniel.
By D. James Kennedy
The
prophecy of the seventy weeks of Daniel is the most
brilliant in all of Scripture. Liberals and skeptics
have no answer for the clear and precise prophecy by
Daniel as to when the promised Messiah would come.
Without supernatural revelation, no mere man could have
set forth the intricate prophetic view recorded in the
ninth chapter of Daniel.
In this prophecy, God predestined that in the time span
of “seventy weeks,” the following six results would be
accomplished.
• First, it is promised that God would “finish the
transgression.” This speaks of a final redemptive act,
which will satisfy God’s righteousness. Within this
specific period of time, God will move in a mighty way
to redeem and forgive His people.
• Second, God promised to “make an end of sins.” The
power of sin and death will be broken. No longer would
sin rule men, but the tyranny of sin would be cast off.
• Third, God proclaimed that He would “make
reconciliation for iniquity.” A final and everlasting
atonement would be made. The legal charges against God’s
people would be dropped because they had been paid for
by a sacrifice. There would be complete reconciliation
between God and His people.
• Fourth, this redemptive act of God would not just
cover and forgive sin, but would actually bring in
“everlasting righteousness.” God’s people would be
accounted righteous again in His sight.
• Fifth, the Old Testament prophecies would be totally
fulfilled in the “seventy weeks,” and all they had
foretold would

come to pass. The
prophecy and the vision of the Old Testament era would be
“sealed”!
• Sixth, and finally, God
would “anoint the most Holy,” or translated literally,
“anoint a holiness of holinesses.” This speaks of God
pouring out His Spirit upon the Messiah. The Messiah will
have the Spirit without measure and be the anointed
Prophet, Priest, and King of God.
All six of these objectives are messianic in their character and
speak of God fulfilling His redemptive promises to His
people. Daniel must have been overwhelmed with the
greatness of this revelation, for he now

when God’s promises would be completed.
Each Week Seven Years
For us to appreciate this prophecy’s accuracy, we must
carefully study the passage itself, the symbolic use of
language in Hebrew literature, and the history of the
ancient world. To begin with, it is necessary for us to
understand that each day of these weeks represents one year.
Therefore, 70 weeks represent 490 years (7 x 70 = 490).
