     Commentary From Dr. Kennedy
The Savior Named “Wonderful”
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful....
—Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
Almost everyone has heard of the “good works” of Jesus Christ. Most, even skeptics, will admit that He was a “good” man. Some will go so far as to say he was a prophet like Moses or Mohammed. But giving him honor as a towering historical figure is one thing. Embracing His claim to be the sinless Son of God is quite another. Just ask any skeptic.
H.G. Wells, who is best known for his science-fiction novels, was by profession an historian. A complete skeptic who made no profession of Christianity, Wells called this penniless teacher from Nazareth a “soaring personality” in his Outline of History.
“More than 1900 years later,” said Wells, “a historian like myself, who doesn’t even call himself a Christian, finds the picture centering irresistibly around the life and character of this most significant man ...”
     E. A. Rowell was raised as an unbeliever. His parents and close family all rejected the claims of Christ. He writes of the “futile amazement with which every skeptic from Celsus to Wells stood around the cradle of the Christ.” Rowell “marveled” that the name of this “poverty-stricken and uneducated plebeian … is yet the most esteemed name on earth, even among the skeptics themselves.” But for Rowell, the “paradox was plain and the mystery solved when I accepted Him for what He claimed to be—the son of God, come from heaven, a Savior of men, but above all, my own Savior.”
Jesus Christ is the Wondrous One—a fact testified to by saints and skeptics. It is just as Isaiah prophesied, “His name shall be called Wonderful.” But it is not the “wonderful” character of Christ that troubles most skeptics. Rather, it is the idea that God would lower Himself and come to earth in the lowly form of a man and willingly submit Himself to the point of death. Though God, he humbled himself to become a man and was “obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” For that reason, as Paul tells us in Philippians 2, “God has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name.”
The wonder of His person is the wonder of this world. His love is a wonder that people have never been able to fully understand or comprehend. The greatest minds cannot fully conceive the wonder of Christ. He lived for nothing of His own, but He did everything for others. Which of us could say such a thing as that?
Do you know any skeptics? If so, share the truth of Jesus Christ with them this Christmas. Allow your life to be a testimony of our “Wonderful Savior.” Because believe it or not, skeptics are included in the promise of Scripture that “… at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” (Philippians 2:10).
