Marriage Petitions to Washington
as Amendment Debate Begins |
Dr.
Gary Cass, the new executive director of the
Center for Reclaiming
America, presented congressional leaders in
Washington, D.C., with more than 400,000 marriage petitions
just before the Senate began debate on a constitutional
amendment that limits marriage to a man and a woman. The
petitions were from members of the Center’s E-army and
friends of Coral Ridge Ministries.
Dr. Cass met with both the House and Senate sponsors of
the legislation—Senator Wayne Allard (CO) and Representative
Marilyn Musgrave (CO)—and the staff of Senators Lindsey
Graham (SC), Bill Nelson (FL), and Jeff Sessions (AL).
Rep. Musgrave expressed her deep gratitude for the
petitions. Musgrave, recently named one of the “most
dangerous people in America,” by a leading homosexual
newsmagazine, said she believes the American people should
have the final say on marriage. She has written: “If
marriage is to be radically redefined, the decision should,
at the very least, be made by the American people and their
elected representatives—not mandated by unelected,
unaccountable judges.” While winning passage of the Federal
Marriage Amendment is a steep uphill battle, she said the
result is in God’s hands.

Pro-family leaders, including Dr. Cass, Tony Perkins of
Family Research Council, and Colby May of the American
Center for Law & Justice, held a joint press conference on
Capitol Hill, on July 9 to present to Sen. Allard more
than 1.4 million petitions in support of the amendment.
Senator Allard urged all Americans to contact their
senators to express support for the amendment. He warned
that if the Senate fails to heed the will of the voters,
“We are headed to judicial-mandated recognition of
same-gender couples, regardless of state or federal
statutes.”
“Just
the Beginning”
Dr. Cass said pro-family forces would not give up this
fight. “This is just the beginning
