Center Gives Statesmanship
Award to Rep. John Hostettler |
Dr.
D. James Kennedy presented Rep. John Hostettler with the
Center for Christian
Statesmanship’s 2004 Distinguished Christian
Statesman award on May 12 at the Rayburn House Office
Building.
When accepting the award, Rep. Hostettler said the
award represented the idea that, in a country founded by
Christians, people should live in a way that holds true to
the principles set forth by Christ. “I hope to influence
others to apply Christian principles to government,” said
Hostettler.
When asked why the
Center chose
Rep. Hostettler to receive its highest honor, Executive
Director George Roller responded, “When he has to make
decisions on Capitol Hill, he always prays about those
decisions and seeks God’s guidance and direction. This is a
person who is striving to serve Christ in the public arena.”
Leaders
are Ministers
“At the Center,
we believe that any leader who serves in government is a
minister,” Roller continued. “And anyone who is a minister
of God has the added duty of doing business God’s way.
That’s why we are pleased to present John Hostettler with

award. His commitment
to Christ and love of country compel him to stand for truth
and righteousness in government.”
Dr. Kennedy said he wants this award to remind other
government leaders that they are accountable to God first
and country second. “Politicians are accountable to God,
because they have no power that is not given by Him. They
are accountable to country because God is ruler, and they
must answer to Him for how they treat His earthly kingdom
and those who dwell here,” said Dr. Kennedy.
Hostettler who grew up in what he calls “Americana USA”
near Evansville, Indiana has been following Christ since age
seven. “At that age I was not on a fast track for Congress.
I was very shy, very introverted,” said Hostettler in an
interview with the
Center.
“My testimony is not a very extraordinary one. Not
necessarily very glamorous. My mother and father raised me
and my nine brothers and sisters to believe in the Lord, to
fear the Lord, and to love the Lord. As we grew up, we were
continually educated in the Word, whether it was at home or
at church.”
