Darwin’s Crumbling Idea
I almost fell out of my chair. A public television interviewer had just asked Sir Julian Huxley, a leading defender of evolution until his death in 1975, why he thought Darwin’s idea caught on so quickly. His answer astonished me.
     “[I suppose the reason] we all jumped at the Origin [Darwin’s On the Origin of Species],” Huxley said, “was because the idea of God interfered with our sexual mores.” “Mores,” of course, is a secular term for morals.
     One might have expected something more lofty. He might have replied that the evidence uncovered by Darwin was so scientifically compelling that we were forced by pure reason, by the scientific integrity of our calling as scientists, to accept the facts as true.
     But that’s not what he said. It was not evidence, not science, but sex that drove him—and others—to embrace the ideas of Darwin.
     Of course, some might say, Huxley’s poor basis for believing evolution does not change the fact that evolution is a scientific fact. Right?
     Wrong. The fact is that evolution has failed at every point. All of the major pillars of evolution are in a state of collapse.
     The late Sir Fred Hoyle, one of Britain’s most well-known mathematicians and astronomers, investigated the probability that life could arise from nonlife. He declared in 1981 that the idea that “a living cell could be arrived at by chance in a primordial organic soup here on the Earth is evidently nonsense of a high order.”
     It was just as likely, he said, that a living cell might come randomly into existence as that “a tornado sweeping through a junkyard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the materials therein.”
     Not only is it impossible that the amazingly complex “simple” cell could emerge from primordial soup, but there is no fossil evidence to confirm Darwin’s claim that life evolved by a series of intermediate steps from amoeba to man. There are no transitional fossils to show organisms going up the evolutionary ladder.
     Charles Darwin commented on this problem over a century ago. Geological research, he acknowledged in Origin of Species, “does not yield the infinitely many fine gradations between past and present species required on the theory.”
     Darwin thought that over time the fossils record would became more complete and “missing links” would be found. They have not. Evolutionists have yet to turn up any evidence of transition fossils.
     Even as these and many more scientific arguments against evolution pile up, it continues to be taught as truth in junior high, high school, and college classrooms across the country. And, as with Julian Huxley, it continues to serve as an engine of unbelief in many young minds.
     But I believe the truth will out. I am sure the day will come when the crumbling pillars of evolution will at last give way, and Darwin’s idea will be recognized for what it is: a pernicious fairy tale.
     To help hasten that day, this month we are launching the national outreach of the Creation Studies Institute. As we do, it is my prayer and conviction that our nation will come to realize that the most scientifically accurate statement on origins that has ever been made is, in fact, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
